Green Building – An Inevitable Trend for the Future

Green construction has been adopted in many countries around the world and has become a global construction trend. In Vietnam, green construction is also gradually developing and creating breakthrough advances for the country's construction industry.

Green construction

Along with the country's development, thousands of construction projects are built in Vietnam every year. Although infrastructure has improved significantly, environmental pollution, construction waste, scrap materials, and other issues that affect the urban landscape and people's health have also increased considerably. This is why green and environmentally friendly construction solutions are gradually becoming a trend in Vietnam's construction industry.

What Is Green Construction?

Green construction refers to buildings that provide many benefits to the environment. They ensure the use of non-toxic resources, have a long service life, and can be recycled. These buildings are designed to minimize environmental pollution and eliminate negative impacts on human health and surrounding ecosystems.

Green construction applies new technologies and green, environmentally friendly, and human-health-safe building materials, such as Ubot flat slabs, green wall cladding, lightweight concrete, recycled metals, and more.

With these new solutions, pollution can be significantly reduced, bringing sustainable value to the entire industry. The development of green building materials also helps contractors save on material costs while effectively reducing labor requirements and construction time.

In the present and future, green buildings are becoming an inevitable trend in the construction industry. To achieve this, engineers need to pay attention to two key factors: green materials and green construction solutions.

Green Construction – An Inevitable Trend for the Future

The environment and climate are undergoing significant changes, threatening human living conditions and making them increasingly adverse. To limit the impact of human activities on the environment in general and the construction industry in particular, many countries are placing greater emphasis on producing environmentally friendly building materials.

According to a study, conventional buildings consume approximately 40% of energy, use 25% of timber, 17% of water, and many other resources. At the same time, they account for 40% of solid waste, 33% of CO2 emissions, and 55% of CFC gases. In contrast, a certified green building can reduce energy consumption by 24–50%, reduce CO2 emissions in the air by 33–39%, save 40% of water, and reduce solid waste by 70%.

Therefore, green buildings show positive changes in indicators related to resources, waste, and other environmental impacts. They use fewer resources and raw materials while minimizing the amount of waste released into the environment. This is the fundamental purpose of green construction.

The criteria for evaluating green materials include:

  • Non-toxic to human health and the environment
  • Helps conserve the Earth's resources
  • Helps limit environmental pollution
  • Has a longer service life than other materials
  • Can be recycled

Common Green Construction Solutions Used Today

Use green building materials to replace traditional materials. Traditional materials are construction materials commonly sourced from nature and processed by humans, such as wood, stone, concrete, and more. Because they originate from natural resources, continuous extraction and use can have serious impacts on our ecosystems. Therefore, green materials have been researched and introduced into construction. Green materials are often made from recycled materials, have high durability, and consume less energy throughout their service life.

With the growing trend toward green construction, green building materials are increasingly appearing on the market in a wide variety of products, such as environmentally friendly paints, tiles and bricks made from industrial waste or new materials, XPS thermal insulation foam, eco-friendly roofing sheets, green wall cladding, green cement, and more.

Ubot flat slab

In particular, a green construction material called the Ubot void former has also been available in the Vietnamese market for several years. Ubot void formers were first transferred to Vietnam in 2012 by Lam Pham Construction Co., Ltd., replacing outdated lightweight floor construction methods that had long presented various issues.

According to manufacturers, because of the structure and composition of lightweight concrete, although it costs approximately 10–15% more than conventional bricks, lightweight concrete blocks can reduce many other costs, such as foundation costs, plastering mortar, air-conditioning energy consumption, and more.

Basic Structure of a Ubot Flat Slab

  • Ubot is a formwork system made from recycled polypropylene plastic, used in slab and raft foundation structures. Ubot has a special structure consisting of four support legs and one conical central leg, together with connecting bars that create a system of perpendicular I-shaped beams between the upper and lower concrete layers of the slab.
  • The basic Ubot body size is 52×52 cm. The height of the void formers can be flexibly adjusted to 10 cm, 13 cm, 16 cm, 20 cm, 24 cm, 28 cm, and so on, to suit different modules.
  • The height of the void-former legs ranges from 5–9 cm and serves to determine the thickness of the concrete layer beneath the slab. It also allows air to escape in the event of a fire.

Outstanding Advantages of Ubot Flat Slabs

  • Ubot flat slabs have an advantage in terms of size. They can be stacked on top of one another and are easy to transport. In particular, the product is made from strong, durable material. It can be stored outdoors and does not break easily like polystyrene foam.
  • Because Ubot is made from recycled plastic, it provides convenience during construction. Ubot can be installed entirely by hand, with simple and easy manual assembly. No complex machinery or equipment is required. As a result, CO2 emissions into the environment are minimized, while noise pollution at construction sites is also reduced.
  • Its height can be flexibly adjusted, and it has excellent fire resistance.
  • Ubot can withstand compressive pressure, vibration, and the load of concrete. After concrete placement, the material does not deform.
Green construction

With these outstanding advantages, Ubot flat slabs are considered one of the leading green construction solutions today, optimizing the construction process while ensuring safety and environmental friendliness. They also provide economic benefits and long-term quality for construction projects.

VRO Slab

VRO slab is a voided slab solution using foam void formers, designed by lecturers from the University of Civil Engineering in 2010. It later became widely known and was used extensively in many locations.

VRO slab structure

VRO slabs are created by placing lightweight, elastic foam cores within the neutral zone of the concrete. The internal foam cores are essentially rectangular foam blocks measuring 38×38 cm, with their height flexibly adjusted according to the slab load. The slab is lightweight and elastic but lacks horizontal stability, so a zigzag frame system is added during production. This helps the product achieve greater stability in all directions.

The use and development of green, environmentally friendly, and socially responsible construction technologies has become an essential trend. Therefore, people should also adopt these key materials in construction to restructure today's construction industry. At the same time, this can open a new chapter for the construction industry with efficient, durable, safe, and environmentally friendly building materials.
